On 3rd March 2015, JCC hosted a Japanese Candy Art Sculpturing Talk and Demonstration also known as Amezaiku by Candy Artist Ms Minori Baba. Amezaiku means Japanese Traditional Candy Art in Japanese. This event was organized to commemorate the Hina Matsuri Festival (Girl’s Festival) which is celebrated on 3rd March in Japan graced by Madam Takeuchi.

Ms Minori Baba is an exceptional candy artist who is interested in Amezaiku since she was young. She can sculpture candies while singing and listening to music. She has been doing candy art demonstrations since 2006 which made her extremely popular around Japan and especially the kids. At JCC, Ms Minori Baba started off with her colorful presentation explaining the different types of Japanese sweets and the significance of celebrating Hina Matsuri.

Next she demonstrated live candy art sculpturing using a portable induction cooker while she sang to anime music. The audience were stunned and amused when they saw her handling of very hot candy approximately 80 to 90 degree celsius. Using a special scissors called “Nigiribasami”, Ms Baba carved out shapes from the hot candies and turned them into dragon, Ponyo in a shape of a goldfish, and Totoro where she gave it to 3 lucky children .

When asked, Ms Baba revealed that the reason for doing this candy art sculpturing was to make people happy by bringing a smile on their faces and to help them forget about the negavity around them. She also mentioned that she loves to cosplay and is currently working at a Japanese Radio Station as a DJ.
